About Me

Transitioning from Neuroscience to Woodworking

I spent over 30 years working in Neuroscience. While it was my passion, it was empirical and also somewhat abstract. To relax and have something that was less subjective I took up making small jewelry boxes from high contrast hardwoods (see Gallery).

After I took early retirement (a mistake), I soon realized that I needed more to occupy my time than I had planned for as I had soon finished my home to-do list.  I gravitated back to woodwork, and have expanded my woodworking skills to include CNC 3D modeling, engraving, and inlays, as well as photo-etching to create more interesting and varied designs.  Feel free to ask about any aspect of these projects and/or techniques.

Cheers, Tig

Services

River Boards

Charcuterie boards are generally 18″ x 10″ x ~ 0.75″ but size and thickness varies from board to board. The wood for the boards I make is dependent on availability. At present I am making boards from Olivewood (above), Walnut, and Ash but supplies are limited,

Wood and Epoxy Art

As an extension to the river boards I have been working on some pieces using book-matched cuts of thicker wood samples.  These boards are made of much the same woods as the river boards.  Sizes vary depending on the book-matched material.

Miscellaneous

Working with wood and epoxy lets me generate side projects such as epoxy drink coasters, circular wood and epoxy table tops and clock faces.  I am also making a live edge river table for a friend. Its not something I am really equipped to do but will try when asked.

Handmade Boxes

The boxes I make range from 4.5 x 3 x 1.5 inches to 7 x 5 x 3 inches.  The wood ranges from Cocobola, Padauk, and Concalo Alves to Yellow Heart Wood, Cypress, and Walnut.  The box above is Ebony, Lace Wood and Concalo Alves with a brass inlay.

CNC 3D Modeling

At present all 3D modelling is done in White Pine but can be stained to any color requested.  I am working on the specs for modelling in Oak and Beach.  Current dimensions are limited to a max of 12 x 12 inches but larger pieces will be available shortly.  Carve shapes can be square, rectangle, round or oval.

Inlay and Engraving

Inlay and engraving are done in Birch Plywood or White Pine, but can be done in different woods on request. Inlays can be done in wood (above)or resin (see Gallery).   Boarders are optional. Current dimensions are again limited to a max of 12 x 12 inches at the moment. As with 3D carvings custom shapes can be requested.
